Why a New U?

  • The current space is structurally & aesthetically outdated.
  • The current space is too small to satisfy the demands of campus needs.
  • There is a constant need of repairs, in the areas of HVAC and plumbing.
  • Function of the Union has drastically evolved from the time building was built in 1970.
  • Current campus population is 14, 700.
  • Campus population was 5,810 when the Union was built in 1970.
  • Campus population was less than 9,000 when the Underground was added in 1990.
  • Infrastructure of current building cannot support the demands of current technology needs or allow for new trends.
  • Student organizations and campus departments often seek alternative campus and off campus space for meetings/events due to space issues
  • Current building and office storage space is minimal. There is not enough storage areas for media equipment, tables, chairs, and programming supplies. Office space has been taken off line to add additional storage space and items are often stored in hallway areas.
  • Dock loading/unloading area is not large enough to accommodate the size of delivery trucks and trash/recyclables removal.
  • Additional services and offices could be relocated to the Union or expanded if there was additional space available, i.e. Student Government Association Offices, Student Organizational space, ID Services, Commuter Services, Union Programming & Scheduling, Career Services, Veteran’s Resource Area, Quiet Study Space, and expanded an Game Room.
